| John was born in 1959, studied calligraphy at Roehampton Institute, London, then worked for a year as assistant to Tom Perkins, returning to Wales in 1992. Most of his current work involves hand lettercarving in stone and slate, undertaken in the workshop or on site, and ranging from architectural lettering to memorials, plaques, and 'sculptural' pieces. He is included on the Crafts Council index of selected makers and is a member of the Arts Council of Wales Crafts Advisory Panel. Recent clients include Memorials by Artists, Cumbria Arts in Education, Royal Collection Trust, The National Trust, Christ Church Cathedral, Oxford, and various local authorities and private clients.
