LX Lecture – Russell Maret, Private Press Printer
Letter Forms as Content: Making Books of Alphabets
Russell Maret is a self-described alphabetical fetishist who grapples with his condition by making alphabetical treatises, writing small books about medieval Italian lettering, and painting things that look like letter forms. A self taught letter designer, Russell designed his first text-specific alphabet in 1996 and now designs a new alphabet for every text he prints. In the last year, as part of a large type specimen project, he has begun collaborating with the Dale Guild Type Foundry to convert a selection of his digital typefaces into new foundry metal faces. In addition to a slide presentation, Russell’s talk will involve a show and tell of his books.
