LX Lecture – Martin Jennings
16 March 2011
Words and Sculpture
Martin Jennings studied lettering at City and Guilds art school before taking up a part-time apprenticeship with Richard Kindersley. In 1981 he co-curated with Richard the exhibition “Architectural Lettering : a Reassessment” at the RIBA. Since then he has pursued a career as a lettercutter and sculptor. Recent commissions have included
statues of John Betjeman and Philip Larkin. He is interested in how public sculpture, particularly when it includes carved wording, can help to articulate our emotional response to architectural space. He will discuss the complementary effects of combining sculpture and lettering and ponder the aesthetic influence that many years of carving letters in stone has had on the business of making sculpture in the round.
