Type Design and the Letter Crafts

The talk will consider the complex and dynamic relationships between the crafts of calligraphy and lettercutting and the design of typefaces. Tracing patterns of influence at different points in typographic history it will look at the ways in which collaborations between the type industry and lettercraft practitioners have informed the development of 20th-century type design, and the potential for current type production technologies to enhance this relationship.

Will Hill is Senior Lecturer in Graphic Design at Anglia Ruskin University where he heads the MA Graphic Design and Typography course. He is the author of The Complete Typographer (2010) and has given numerous conference papers and lectures in the UK, Europe and the USA. He writes regularly for Ultrabold and other typographic journals and is currently completing a PhD on Type and Materiality.
