LX Lecture – Monica Dengo, Lettering Artist

'Cursive' as a gesture of self-expression

It doesn’t matter if it is beautiful; handwriting always has to be personal.
Monica Dengo

Monica Dengo is a calligrapher, and letters written by hand are her passion. She as written a manual on handwriting called Pick Up Your Pens, and curated the 2010 exhibition in Venice called The Poetics of Written Space. Monica has taught workshops in Europe, Japan and the USA on experimental handwriting and calligraphy, and has piloted the re-introduction of italic handwriting in Italian schools.

In my opinion calligraphy is at a turning point in its history and focusing on handwriting and its possibility to expand into art is a necessity. Handwriting as art means a balance of space and gesture, a flow of thoughts through dancing lines, and an image of our deepest emotions.
